Itinerary

After leaving Milan early in the morning and a comfortable three-hour drive by luxury minivan, you will reach Venice and begin the tour.

On arrival in Venice you will take a cruise on the Grand Canal – a “must do” in Venice.

You will enjoy spectacular views of Venice, taste its architectural wonders (buildings, palaces, bridges and canals), and admire the elegance of the grand mansions that line its banks.

The ferry will take you to Piazza San Marco (St. Mark’s Square). Thanks to the elegance of its monuments, San Marco is rightly considered the great “Salotto” (or drawing room), of Venice.

San Marco’s beautiful buildings include the Doge Palace, the grand Old Law Courts, the Clock Tower, and the magnificent St. Mark’s Basilica and Campanile.

Setting off from St. Mark’s Square, with views of the Grand Canal, you will head through the narrow streets, laced with lovely canals and crumbling, historic houses.

Some of the sight-seeings you should see in Venice:

• St. Mark’s Basilica: built in 829 to house the remains of St. Mark, the city’s patron saint, and consecrated in 1024. The frescos above the entrance tell the story of St. Mark. It’s one of the most majestic cathedrals in the world. View masterpieces of Byzantine art (starting from the facade), savor the beauty of the cathedral’s gold mosaics and marble inlays, and admire fine examples of religious art in the Treasury.

• Bell Tower: built in the 9th century and originally used as a lookout tower and a lighthouse. The bells were rung to inform the city’s inhabitants of the main events organized in Venice.

• The Doge’s Palace: home of the Doge (the elected ruler of Venice) and the venue for the courts of law and civil administration. The exquisite palace took on its present form in the 15th-century. Admire the beautiful white marbles of the loggiato.

• Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri): built to connect the interrogation rooms, where prisoners were tried, to their cells which were known as the piombi. It was here that the convicts got their last view of Venice before their imprisonment.

• The Phoenix Opera house (La Fenice): destroyed twice by fire, it was rebuilt to run successfully again.

• Campo San Beneto: an ancient 11th century church, rebuilt in the 16th century.

• Rialto Bridge (Ponte di Rialto): a landmark structure on the Grand Canal, with shops selling souvenirs, jewellery and glass products.

• Marco Polo’s House

• Chiesa Santa Maria Formosa: the Holy Virgin is alleged to have appeared here disguised as a voluptuous woman.

• Campo SS. Giovanni e Paolo: the second largest square in Venice.

In addition to Venice’s big-name sights, you will have the time to enjoy Venice wandering in the calli, a labyrinthine web of narrow Venetian streets and canals. This is the best way to discover hidden gems in Venice that many visitors miss.

If you wish, you can visit a glass-making workshop to see a skilled craftsperson creating glass vases and perhaps shop for well-crafted souvenirs to take home.

Last, but not least, why not finish your day in Venice with an optional gondola ride around the Venetian lagoon?
